Pesquisador Dr. Egon Balas morre aos 96 anos, pioneiro na área de Otimização Combinatória

Fomos informados pelo Prof. Maculan da morte Dr. Egon Balas, pesquisador expoente e pioneiro na área de Otimização Combinatória (programação inteira e combinatória poliédrica) e professor da TOP3 CMU - Carnegie Mellon University.

“I met Prof. Egon Balas in 1976, he was touring in Brazil and phoned me. That same year, invited by me, he taught an Integer Programming course at the Systems Engineering and Computer Science Program – COPPE - Institute of Mathematics - Federal University of Rio de Janeiro. 

Thanks to him I could have an international career. At that time there was neither internet nor fax! Egon opened the doors for me and colleagues working in Brazil. In last December he sent me his book "Disjunctive Programming" with a beautiful dedication.

The whole area of Combinatorial Optimization will miss him a lot. He was a pioneer.
